The Reality of Housekeepers in Singapore

The Reality of Housekeepers in Singapore

Singapore that the richest country in Asia.

In Singapore, it is common to hire a housekeeper.

In Singapore, 1 out of 6 households hires a

housekeeper.

There are also foreign housekeepers a lot.

Mainly the Philippines and Indonesia.

About 26,000 of them.

But main of them are exploited by employers.

That reality is too terrible.

Mental and physical attack damage reports are 25% of the total
・The total working hours exceeding 12 hours are 84%
・Forcing work even on a day off is 41%
・Unpaid salary victim, violence victim report is 800 over annual 1-year
・Monitoring by a surveillance camera from employers

There are these reports.

But why it happened......

The reason why that happened is because there are no employment regulations by law.

Naturally, housework is a daily task.

Therefore, there is no specific date and time for it.

It's not practical to schedule housework.

So no employment regulations.

As a result, housekeepers are treated according to

the convenience of the employers.

But Even if the working conditions are excessively harsh, housekeepers cannot quit.

Because the income of housekeepers in Singapore is minimum wage.
The average income 1month is $381.
It's already very cheap.
But it includes food expenses and living expenses.
Actual income is about $158.

The average income for 1 month in 2015 in Singapore is $3,694.

The income of housekeepers is less than 10% of the average income in Singapore.

It's impossible to survive!!

That's why housekeepers have to follow employers to live.

That results, in abnormal working time, working without days off, low-wage labor, mentality, and physical violence.

The birth of inescapable exploitation.

And it's related to Japan where I live.
A similar situation happens in Japan too.

Technical training system.

It's called the slave system of modern

by foreign countries.

It's essential that employers and workers also need to have respect each other.

Because employers and workers both also need each other.

Human history is truly complex, isn’t it? There are countless websites introducing historical figures and events, but many of them are just plain explanations—not exactly exciting to read. On the other hand, reading books takes a lot of time and effort. That’s where I come in. Through "stories that are more engaging than explanations and shorter than books," I aim to bring the world’s history and humanity’s records to you in a more accessible and interesting way. If my stories inspire you to love history a little more, I’d be absolutely thrilled!
